How to Use a Ceramic Detail Spray for a Slick, Protected Finish

Ceramic detail spray is the fastest way to add gloss and protection to paint that is already clean. Used correctly it takes a few minutes per car and leaves a slick surface that sheds water and resists dust.
Start with a clean, cool panel
Ceramic sprays bond to paint, not to dirt. Wash and dry the vehicle first, and work in the shade on panels that are cool to the touch. Applying to hot paint in direct sun is the number one cause of streaking.
Work one panel at a time
- Mist two to three sprays onto the panel, or onto your towel if the panel is small.
- Spread evenly with a clean microfiber towel in straight-line passes.
- Flip to a dry side of the towel and buff until the surface looks clear and feels slick.
- Move to the next panel and repeat.
Where else you can use it
Most ceramic detail sprays are safe on glass, chrome, plastic trim and wheels once those surfaces are clean. Always read the label on the bottle you are using and test a small area first.
How often to reapply
For a daily driver, reapplying after each wash keeps the surface consistently slick. For a garage-kept car, every few weeks is usually plenty. If water stops beading the way it did when new, it is time for another coat.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a dirty or previously waxed towel — it will smear the product.
- Spraying the whole car at once and letting the product dry before buffing.
- Applying over dirt or dust, which drags grit across the paint.
