How to Get Tire Shine That Actually Lasts (and Doesn't Sling)

Dressed tires finish a detail. The problem most people run into is not the product — it is applying it to a tire that was never properly cleaned, or applying far too much.
Clean the tire first
Old dressing, brake dust and road film build up into a brown layer that blocks anything new from bonding. Scrub the sidewall with a stiff brush and your wash soap until the suds stop turning brown.
Let the sidewall dry
Dressing over a wet tire dilutes the product and causes uneven patches. Give the sidewall a few minutes, or wipe it down with a dedicated towel.
Apply thin, then level
- Apply to an applicator pad rather than spraying directly at the tire.
- Work around the sidewall in one even pass.
- Wipe off any excess with a separate towel — excess is what slings.
- Add a second thin coat if you want a wetter, glossier look.
Let it set before you drive
Give it ten to fifteen minutes before moving the vehicle. That short wait is the difference between a clean sidewall and spots down your rear quarter panel.
